Taking Easter back from the bunny?
On the bus to work this morning, I saw one of those cardboard mini-poster advertisements (the ones that sit above one’s head that the people on the other side of the bus can ignore) announcing Resurrection07 — Reclaim Easter from the Bunny, an evangelical christian event to be held in Scotland.
Yes, quite. Only Easter isn’t originally a christian festival, is it? Nope, it’s not.
Not only has christianity coöpted yet another festival from an alternative tradition, but they’re now claiming that it was theirs originally, and that they’re trying to take it back. FFS, they didn’t even change the name from the original pagan version.
I do think that this is amusing though; from their web site:
Join with thousands of Christians from across central Scotland on Easter Sunday in a free event proclaiming the risen Christ at Scotland’s National Showground, the Royal Highland Centre Highland Hall at Ingliston, where the M8 and M9 join.
Their emphasis.
I’m surprised that they haven’t tried to claim that the junction of the M8 and M9 form a cross-shape (the closest it come is to an inverted ‘tau’ or ‘T’) and adding to the ‘truth’ of their religion, but it doesn’t appear that accuracy or reality have any bearing on their claims anyway, so I guess it’s moot.
They’re offering free tickets online, although I am not advocating applying for lots of tickets and then not showing up. That would be naughty.
