“The sky is the enemy of lust”

8 April 2007

Oh, this is just too precious not to share.

Over at Desiring God, there’s an excerpt from an audio sermon from a certain John Piper about “why porn shops don’t have windows”.

Desiring God opens with:

The obvious answer is so you can’t see in. But is there more to it than that?

and then goes on to point one to the audio, which suggests why they really don’t have windows. A couple of moments into the audio, Piper declares the following:

You know why? Because they don’t want people looking out — at the sky. You know why? The sky is the enemy of lust. Now I just ask you, I just asked you, you think back on your struggles, the sky is a great power against lust. Pure, lovely, wholesome, beautiful, powerful, large-hearted things cannot abide the soul of a sexual fantasy at the same time.

My emphasis.

In fact, I’ll go even further: I bet the rain — that damp, moistening, humidifying, sweat-like drizzle from the sky — supports porn, just look at the stereotype of a dirty old man in a raincoat as a frequent customer of these establishments. Dirty, naughty, sinful rain — all that wetness and clamminess just begging you to rub yourself down with a towel…

Although, somehow I don’t think this is the reason at all. I think it’s more likely something to do with obscenity laws prohibiting exhibition of adult materials to minors, and that the good pastor Piper is just another wingnut looking for signs where there aren’t any.

He gets kinda worked up near the end, but really, you’ve just got to laugh — it’d be rude not to.

Wow. Crazies are brilliant, aren’t they :-)

I often wonder if these people actually believe ANY of the tosh they through out, or if it is just a manipulative way of milking money out of the really gullible…

Both? Crazies conning other crazies has a symmetry that I can appreciate on some level.
