Humanism acceptance to Thought for the Day?

20 April 2007

In an amazing turn around, the BBC’s Thought for the Day programme may, in future, include humanist and other non-religious viewpoints! I’ve just received this email from the British Humanist Association (via the Humanist Society of Scotland):

Subject: Thought for the Day

We seem to be getting somewhere with our campaign to have humanist voices included on Radio 4’s ‘Thought for the Day’. Yesterday BHA member Lord Harrison of Chester raised the point on the Today programme and this morning, Jonathan Bartley of Ekklesia (the Christian think tank with which the BHA has worked on issues like creationism), himself a contributor to Thought for the Day, made the case for including humanist contributors.

John Humphries this morning asked people to email in if they wanted humanist thinkers included in Thought for The Day so please take the time to contact the Today programme on today@bbc.co.uk and make the case for non-religious thinkers to be included! We know that many of you sent emails in support of Joan Bakewell when she too appeared (on Radio 4’s Feedback) to argue for the inclusion of humanists – if you didn’t then, please email now! If you did, please email again!

As the Professor from Futurama says, “Good news, everybody!” So get emailing! :-)

This has the potential to be good. I have a small worry that the more “fringe” elements may use it as a bandwagon to jump on and even more “crystal healers” will get air time though :-)

How can a reduction in the average amount of woo on the BBC be a bad thing? ;-)

    Very true :-)

There's probably no god. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.
