Upcoming lectures at the University of Edinburgh

There are two interesting lectures this month that might be of interest to readers here.

Steve Jones
On Friday 22nd June Steve Jones, professor of genetics at UCL is presenting the William Dick Memorial Lecture in the Assembly Hall of New College, entitled Is Man Just Another Animal.

Daniel Dennett
And, one that I’m particularly eager to go to, is on less than a week later on Wednesday 27th June when Daniel Dennett, professor of philosophy at Tufts University, will be presenting a lecture in the Enlightenment Lectures series entitled Is science showing that we don’t have free will?, again in the Assembly Hall.

    Oh bugger it. I’ve been reading about the subject of free will lots recently. I’m fascinated by the topic. Now I see Dennett is addressing it at a lecture but it’s in Edinburgh! I’m in London. I’d go if I was within a few hundred miles but it takes ages to get up there. I’m so annoyed! What a pain. :(

    It’s only about 4 hours on the train these days. Thankfully it’s not the 8-odd hours that it used to be. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a pain being on a Wednesday if one is not local and has to work the next day.

    Dennett also gave a lecture here last March (IIRC) which I missed, so I’m damned well not going to miss this one too.

    4 hours? Still, on a Wednesday. I’m really annoyed. I’d love to go. Hopefully a transcript will become available. I could get out of work I suppose….hmmm

    FWIW, they do offer podcasts (i.e. MP3 downloads) of some of the previous lectures, so I can only assume that they’ll do the same for the Dennett one.

    Ah, superb. I’m not so annoyed now either because I’ve checked the diary and I’m away in Frankfurt for business so I don’t have any choice! But that begs the question, with regards to free will, did I have a choice anyway?!! Mindboggling :)
