Arthur C Clarke (1917-2008)

I’ve just heard on the news that sci-fi author and inventor Arthur C Clarke has died at the grand old age of 90 in Sri Lanka.

While I’ve not read much of his more recent output, his earlier works will stay with me and I am ever grateful for their influence in my childhood.

In a similar manner, I haven’t read anything recent from Arthur C Clarke, but he certainly occupied many years of my childhood.

He was, at his best, a wonderful science fiction writer and can certainly be credited with directing the way science has progressed at times.

I would certainly agree with that, he was a huge influence on me being interested in astronomical engineering as a kid.

I did hear that Hollywood is in pre-production for Rendezvous with Rama, which is, off the top of my head, probably my second favourite book of his. Let’s hope that it does it justice, and doesn’t turn out as so many book-to-film translations do.
