Without being too depressed/cynical, it strikes me that the government pays little or no attention to them. Only when a petition supports a planned government policy does it work - often to much fanfare. Take the petition about ID cards for example - millions of signatures and still told to get lost (albeit with a personal email...) Do petitions work or are they a way of sedating the masses into thinking they have an impact?
