I had quite a lengthy argument over the weekend about the "religion of atheism" - basically my opponents were saying that the dogmatic "secular humanists" had formed a religion out of atheism and were trying to supplant the currently established religions with it. The main things that annoyed me about the whole argument were that the people I was discussing it with weren't even followers of a monotheistic religion and, crucially, when I asked them for examples or evidence of their claims they degenerated into mumbling about being rude to question others beliefs. Infuriating is an understatement. Sadly, this is quite an accurate description of how people perceive atheists/atheism.
