Sadly, this is quite an accurate description of how people perceive atheists/atheism.

I had quite a lengthy argument over the weekend about the "religion of atheism" - basically my opponents were saying that the dogmatic "secular humanists" had formed a religion out of atheism and were trying to supplant the currently established religions with it.

The main things that annoyed me about the whole argument were that the people I was discussing it with weren't even followers of a monotheistic religion and, crucially, when I asked them for examples or evidence of their claims they degenerated into mumbling about being rude to question others beliefs. Infuriating is an understatement.

I guess that makes me “intolerant, dogmatic, assertive, fundamentalist, militant” or just smart enough to question dogmatic fools.
