Guardian: Woman arrested for naming teddy-bear “Mohammed”

Yeah, you read that right…

I really have no comment to make on this story, apart from a great big

What The Fuck?

A British teacher has been arrested in Sudan for letting her children name a teddy bear Mohammed, the British Embassy said.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was detained on Sunday on suspicion of insulting Islam’s prophet.

The teacher let her class of seven year olds choose the name as part of a school project.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm a British national was arrested by police in Sudan yesterday. We are providing consular assistance.”

A spokesman for the British Embassy in Khartoum said Ms Gibbons taught at Unity High School in central Khartoum.

He said: “The children chose the name because it is very common here.

No shit. Every other man in the islamic world, it seems, has one part or other of their name that’s a variation on Mohammed. Hell, even in the UK (variations on spelling aside) it’s now the second most common name for boys (after Jack).

I think a nice, slow round of applause for islam is deserved.

BBC: Bishop noses in on BA crucifix bollocks

Nadia Eweida - thinks not wearing her cross will result in the end of the worldThe Bishop of London has welcomed a review of uniform policy by British Airways in the wake of a row over a worker ordered to stop wearing a cross.

Great. So another god-botherer is now sticking their nose into something that essentially is a private/commercial matter.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s PM programme, the Bishop of London paid tribute to Ms Eweida.

He said: “I hope in some ways that this story is going to encourage more people to wear their cross to stand up in public for the historic faith of this country because they can certainly do so in a way that protects the rights of others as well as Christians.

In that case, I think I want to get a job for BA and wear a “fuck you, god doesn’t exist, get a clue” t-shirt as part of my uniform. This is to stand up for the historic rational, scientific and enlightenment ideas of this country that one doesn’t need a to bow down to a non-existent big brother figure.

Ms Eweida, 55, from London, said she was effectively forced to take unpaid leave after refusing to hide the cross symbol she wore round her neck when people of other faiths were allowed to wear visible religious symbols such as headscarves.

She has been refusing to return to work since the ban and earlier this week lost an appeal against the decision.

After Mr Walsh’s announcement of a policy review she said: “If they are going to review the policy and allow Christians their place in the workforce then that is a big relief.”

Forced by whom? Nobody but herself in trying to maintain this charade of ‘offense’. Who has lost anything if she doesn’t wear her cross? Nobody. Would she lose her faith or her religion? No. Would she lose the ability to do her job? No. Would her health suffer? No. Would she be less religious if she wore it under her uniform? Would it like shite. Would her god love her any less? A moot question. The same goes for those with the damned headscarves.

And it’s blindingly apparent that her “place in the workforce” wasn’t jeopardised by BA, it was jeopardised by her refusing to return to work! The lies and hypocrisy just ooze out of these people.

Besides, I don’t know that I would trust someone who ostensibly is employed to be partly responsible for maintaining safety within an environment, that has been known to be used by extreme religious idiots, who places their “faith” in an invisible sky-friend, rather that in the inate goodness of decent people and the well-tested principles of aerodynamics.
